GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Navona Square is one of the best examples of urban continuity that is in Rome: his own narrow and elongated shape, curve in one of the smaller sides to mimic the appearance of the Stadium of Domitian, public building built by this emperor to host shows athletic competitions along with the music of the Odeon in Campo Marzio, constituted the core of the Certamen Capitolinum, festival in honor of Jupiter Optimus Maximus established precisely by Domitian in 86 AD

The stage consisted of a central track, the current square, which remained free of buildings throughout the centuries, and a series of steps at several levels for spectators, on which imposed the buildings that now constitute the monumental backdrop of the whole. As the stage, and not circus, there was no central spine nor carceres.

From Piazza di Tor Sanguigna you can admire the remains of one of the entrances of the pitch came to light in the years 1936-38 under the INA of the building: this is the best preserved area of ??the whole building. It is observed that the entrance was highlighted by a pair of columns in marble, while the rest of the facade was made of travertine blocks with semi-leaning. The structure was instead of brick, and was available in three ambulatory of arches supporting two floors of stairs. Every five arches there was a staircase leading to the upper floors. Even today the cellars of the buildings surrounding the square are formed by the arches of the stadium.

The environments of the galleries were instead scenario vibrant and shady business activities: shops and most filthy brothels abounded in the dark the ambulatory and attracted a clientele disreputable, attracted by the specialty of prostitutes advertised as written and paintings on the outside of the brothels.

In this environment infamous tradition places the martyrdom of Agnes Christian at the time of the Emperor Domitian, to whom the church is dedicated to St. Agnes in Agony by Borromini. Dragged naked in the basement to be mocked and exposed to the gaze of visitors lascivious brothel, she was saved by the miracle that he lengthen her hair to such an extent as to cover the beauty of the naked body. Even today in the basement of the church some paintings recall the martyrdom of Agnes and host a beautiful chapel with marble altar and Roman marble columns.
