GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Inside the Park of the Scipios, between the Via Appia and the Via Latina, a small house in masonry forms the entrance to a tomb for the refinement and perfect preservation of the decor can be considered a jewel of funerary art.

A steep staircase leads to a small funerary chapel, built in the Julio-Claudian but attended until the time of Antoninus Pius, with changes in the decoration relevant to the Flavian period. In front of the staircase is one of the oldest wall mosaics found in Italy, made with pieces of glass on a blue background and surrounded by a row of shells, which retains the name of both spouses, Pomponio Hylas and his wife Pomponia Vitalinis, whose ashes are housed in pots placed in the niche above the mosaic.

The only compartment of the chapel charms for the preciousness of decoration in bright colors, which covers all the walls, moved by niches with stucco friezes and pediments with characters from the mythical world. Unfortunately it has been stolen most suppellettile Mobile, as lanterns and urns, which were laid on the counters protruding. The compartment is rectangular with a vaulted apse and on the bottom with a beautiful shrine to shrine. The shrine, as we learn from the marble table, contains the ashes of the founders of the sepulcher, and Nestor Granius Vinileia Hedone, which are also represented in the painting on the back wall. On the tympanum, it is recognized Dionysus with the deerskin. On the vault, a light-colored fresco reproduces the dance of cupids and birds between vines, in a setting of tranquility and gaiety.
There are many references to the Dionysian world, such as rolls and mystical cyst related to the cult of Dionysus and Isis, together with the presence of the Fates, the three sisters who presided over the birth, life and death of every human being. The subjects of the decoration then allude to a cultured environment, also linked to the music, as suggested by the image in stucco of the centaur Chiron Achilles in the eardrum that educates the newsstand next to the staircase, and a world that values ??the love of literature within a social class that because of economic ease, he devoted himself to otium and a path purifier.
