GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The creation of the Insula is linked to a strong population explosion that took place in Rome between the end of the Republic and the first two centuries of the Empire. The insula term was coined for the first time by Cicero, who wanted to identify the type of dwelling with a growth in height. This idea of ??creating in this way the private houses solved the problem of crowding of urban space.
The Insula of the Ara Coeli was built close to the slopes of the Capitoline Hill and its construction dates back to the early decades of the second century AD The building was created in brickwork and was characterized by some circles of irregular shape. It was composed of four floors and, as was usual for the insula, had street-level tabernae, which looked out onto a paved courtyard with paving stones.
The shops had a loft on the top floor, while the first floor is accessed by stairs wood placed within individual tabernae. Towards the end of the third century A.D. was added all'edifico a portico with pillars of the facade, which covered the entrance halls of the tabernae and overlying the mezzanine windows. |
