The Gardens – an oasis of tranquillity, completely protected by high walls – is the place where the Holy Father privately meditates and enjoys the nature that surrounds him.
Created in 1279 when Pope Nicholas III (Giovanni Gaetano Orsini, 1277-1280) moved the papal residence from the Lateran to the Vatican, the high walls were built for general defense purposes. Pope Nicholas III had fruit trees (pomerium), lawns (pratellum) and a proper garden (viridarium) planted in the grounds and we know this because there is a stone with an inscription, that is preserved in the Sala dei Capitani near Palazzo dei Conservatori on Capitol Hill.
This first part of the garden was created near the Sant'Egidio hill that today is the site of Palazzetto del Belvedere and the Vatican Museums courtyard.
