Pope Nicholas III had fruit trees (pomerium), lawns (pratellum) and a proper garden (viridarium) planted in the grounds and we know this because there is a stone with an inscription, that is preserved in the Sala dei Capitani near Palazzo dei Conservatori on Capitol Hill. This first part of the garden was created near the Sant'Egidio hill that today is the site of Palazzetto del Belvedere and the Vatican Museums courtyard.
