Basilica di S.S. Pietro e Paolo
The Basilica Parish of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome stands on the highest point of the Eur, where it is believed that there was a chapel of the arch of the Pilgrims, dedicated to the two apostles.
It is entrusted to the care of the Frati Minori Conventuali della Provincia Romana. The design was entrusted to the architects Arnaldo Foschini, Alfredo Energetic, Vittorio Grassi, Nello Ena, Tullio Rossi and Constantine Vetriani.
The project was approved in September 1938 and work commenced in April 1939. Opened for worship in July 1955 the church received the dignity of the parish in December 1958 and the title of Cardinals, was in fact entrusted to the solicitude of Cardinal Francis Seper, in November 1965. In June of 1966 the church was consecrated by Cardinal Seper and the following year elevated to the dignity of Basilica.
The temple, a Greek cross, consists of a central cube and a hemispherical dome with a diameter of 32 meters. Outside, on the sides of the porch, there are large statues of the patron saints respectively Peter and Pau. Finally, a monumental staircase joins the church square to down Viale Europa.
Inside, above the altar, dominated by the figure of Christ triumphant; to the left, in the chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, is a mosaic depicting the Madonna and Child surrounded by a crown of angels. On the right, however, there is the chapel of St. Francis where a shovel is placed in the mosaic that has the poor man of Assisi along with some Franciscan saints.
Currently (2007) the church is undergoing major restoration and conservation.
