Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano
The Cathedral of Rome is situated on the hill of Celio .
It was founded by Pope Miltiades between 311 and 314 on a property of the family of Plauzi Laterani , given to him by his wife of Emperor Constantine. It is therefore the oldest basilica in the world considering that its foundation about fourteen precedes that of St. Peter's Basilica .
Over the centuries it was renovated and rebuilt several times , so if one side of the basement contains the remains of the oldest structures , the outer walls remain , although reinforced in later centuries, the early Middle Ages , while belonging to the thirteenth century , the cloister and the two bell towers .
They are the result of the intervention conducted by Domenico Fontana century by Giacomo Della Porta and the transept and the side wall , obtained at the benediction
