The church of Santa Maria Annunziata del Gonfalone, better known as Oratorio del Gonfalone, is a rectory church in Rome, in the Ponte district, located in Via del Gonfalone, near Via Giulia. Since 1960, the oratory is home to the Roman Polyphonic Choir , which regularly hosts concerts .
The church was built around the middle of the sixteenth century on the ruins of the old church of Santa Lucia, as an oratory of the Archconfacilities of the Gonfalone, which had its seat in the adjacent palace dedicated to the Most Holy Mary and the Apostles Peter and Paul .
The term "gonfalone" means "flag / banner", and refers to the fact that in the 14th century, in its processions, the Brotherhood used to raise the Pope's flag (at that time in Avignon) to re-emphasize its sovereignty over Rome. The oratory was then restored in the 17th century by Domenico Castelli, which also has a facade.
The oratory is precious for the paintings that adorn it and portray Stories of the Passion of Christ , a series of twelve frescoes by the leading exponents of Roman Mannerism . In fact, they are the frescoes that represent the Empire of Christ in Jerusalem, the Last Supper and the Calvary Journey; of Caesar Fog the Oratory in the Garden, the Coronation of Thorns and the Ecce Homo; Raffaellino da Reggio the "Capture of Jesus, of Federico Zuccari the Flagellation; of Daniele da Volterra the Crucifixion and the Deposition of the Cross; Marco da Siena the Resurrection, by Matteo da Lecce David. In the wooden ceiling there is a carved work by Ambrogio Bonazzini depicting the Virgin and the Saints Peter and Paul.
The remains of the chapel of Santa Lucia, which the Arciconfraternita used as a cemetery, are visible in the oratory subterranean.
Gonfalone has been playing music for more than four centuries, since it was inaugurated at the end of the sixteenth century by the Arconian Fraternity because, among other things, the Mass was sung. Sacred music has been added to sacred music
The musical programming of the Gonfalone aims to create a point of reference for the execution of the Baroque repertoire , which more than any other finds its architectural and pictorial context of the Oratory. At the same time, each year it offers a choice of programs inspired by specific themes or particular musical anniversaries.
