The Crypta Balbi was originally a vast arcaded courtyard annexed to the theater that Lucio Cornelio Balbo had erected at the behest of Augustus at the end of the 1st century BC. It represents an extraordinary testimony to the evolution of Roman society and the urban landscape from antiquity to the 20th century. Twenty years of excavations and research have brought to light a series of transformations and reuse of the same monument and help to understand social customs and economic activities during the dark period that marks the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages.

The museum is located in the part of the restored building complex between via delle Botteghe Oscure and via M. Caetani, which includes the "Barberini dormitory" and two medieval houses overlooking Via delle Botteghe Oscure.

The visit includes an exhibition on three floors and a path between various buildings.
Along with the materials recovered in the excavations of the Crypta, such as pottery from various peiod, tools and architectural fragments, exhibits from the historical collections of the National Roman Museum are also exhibited (antiquity of the Kircherian Museum, Gorga and Betti collections, Medagliere collection).
The excavations of the esedra of the theater have recently been opened to visitors, where the various re-uses of the place can be identified. The cellars can also be visited, from which you can observe the structures of the crypt and a monument intended for the free distribution of wheat (Porticus Minucia) with medieval extensions.
