LA TRAVIATA
The Orchestra of I Virtuosi dell'Opera di Roma performs Giuseppe Verdi's famous and emotional opera with costumes and sets.
The opera tells the story of the impossible love, destined to end in tragedy, between Violetta, a famous socialite, and Alfredo, a young man from a good family, in mid-nineteenth-century Paris.
Act I
Paris. Mid-nineteenth century. There is a great party at the home of Violetta Valéry, a famous socialite whose health is seriously ill. A nobleman, Gastone, introduces his friend Alfredo, who sincerely admires her, to the lady of the house.
The attention Violetta shows for her new acquaintance does not escape Duphol, her habitual lover. As Violetta and Alfredo dance, the young man declares his love for her and Violetta gives him a camellia: she will only see Alfredo again when it has wilted.
Violetta is in love, for the first time.
Act II
Alfredo and Violetta Valéry are now living happily in a country villa. Alfredo finds out from the maid Annina that Violetta is selling her jewels because she has run out of money and rushes to Paris to get some.
Violetta, having refused an invitation to a party given by Flora, receives an unexpected visit from Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, who accuses her of leading his son into poverty. Violetta replies that she has never asked Alfredo for anything, but Giorgio does not give up his plan to separate Alfredo and Violetta. She does what she believes to be the good of her lover and abandons Alfredo, who is seized with jealousy.
Violetta reappears at a party again accompanied by Duphol, who would like to challenge young Germont to a duel. Violetta begs him to leave the house; he will only leave, he says, if she follows him. Violetta then reveals that she has sworn to Duphol that she will never meet him again, so as not to tell Alfredo about the conversation she had with her father. Alfredo is indignant and treats her like a prostitute. Giorgio arrives and reproaches him for this behaviour, but does not reveal the truth.
Act III
Violetta's health has greatly deteriorated. She can no longer get out of bed. She receives a letter from Germont: at last he has decided to explain everything to his son. Alfredo is moved and is on his way.
Violetta is incredibly happy, but fears she will not survive until he arrives. But, finally, Alfredo is there, at her bedside; and his deeply regretful father is there too. The consumption kills Violetta in front of them, in an atmosphere of acute pain, softened, however, by the delicacy and purity of feelings.
