NEW SEASON 2019-2020
As introducing in the new interprating of Puccini's masterpiece so loved and so often represented at the Rome Opera.
The new staging will be cured in every aspect (direction, scenes, costumes) by one of the greatest contemporary artists, Ai Weiwei, who for the first time tries and deals at a theatrical direction. A choice far from his usual artistic research, but which Ai Weiwei accepted also because, as he very young age, he had been background actor in Zeffirelli's Turandot at the Metropolitan. From those New York days, a long journey as an artist and opponent of the Chinese government has led him to be a figure of absolute prominence in the artistic world of today: just in New York last year he was entrusted with fifty locations where to set up his own huge staff. Reading the imaginary Chinese world of Gozzi, and then Puccini, by a Chinese artist will be a cause of extraordinary interest.
To direct Turandot will be Alejo Pérez, who recently achieved great success with Prokof'ev's L´angelo di fuoco and who in recent years had established himself in Il naso di Šostakovi─Ź and in the Lulu di Berg: therefore a specialist of the historical twentieth century able to underline many changes of Puccini's writing.
In the role of the princess with Anna Pirozzi will alternate Amber Wagner (in her Roman debut), Calaf will be Gregory Kunde (alternating with Arsen Soghomonyan, also at his debut), Altoum Carlo Bosi, Timur Antonio di Matteo (alternate with Marco Spotti) , Liù will be played by Francesca Dotto, as she is always there at the Theater of Costanzi. There will be Alessio Verna (Ping), Francesco Pittari (Pang), Pietro Picone (Pong) and, from the “Fabbrica” YAP project, Andrii Ganchuk (a mandarin).
