by Bernard Slade
with Alberto Giusta, Alessia Giuliani
directed by Antonio Zavatteri
Can a love story go on undisturbed for twenty-four years? "Of course! "Bernard Slade would say. Specifying that "the secret is to meet only that day at the same time. Every year." At the same time next year is a 1975 comedy by Bernard Slade, a brilliant Canadian author. It is a sentimental comedy of rare comedy. George and Doris, both married, meet by chance in a motel in the north of San Francisco and between them immediately sparks, accomplice a steak, specialty of the restaurant of the motel. The comedy tells their love story, their sentimental vicissitudes over twenty-four years. A love comedy capable of making people laugh until they cry.
"At the same time, next year is definitely - says director Antonio Zavatteri - a very funny comedy about love and adultery, but even more so it is a "time travel" that we viewers do by following the events of the two lovers who every year take a break from the routine of their lives, meeting clandestinely in a hotel room to spend a night of passion, and to look at each other and imagine a different life.
We, with them, go through a period of twenty-five years and we see, through their stories, the passage of our time feeling that thrill and vertigo that one feels when taking stock of one's life. Bernard Slade's comedy has a history of wide-ranging staging, from Broadway to our theaters, often with distinguished performers and brilliance to spare, a comedy that is necessary and wonderfully contained in the writing, but as well as necessary emotion - concludes Zavatteri - that we must arouse recognizing ourselves in the protagonists.
