Established in 1957 by an agreement between the Ministry of Education and former IsMEO (Italian Institute for the Middle and Far East), today IsIAO, (Italian Institute for Africa and the East) and granting their collections in storage, was inaugurated the following year.
It is located in the palace of the Prince Brancaccio, Renaissance-style building designed in 1892-96 by the architect Luca Carimini.
The collection was formed with state purchases, exchanges, donations and artifacts and art objects reported by IsMEO archaeological missions in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan.
The permanent exhibition is divided into sections: Ancient Near and Middle East, India, Gandhara, Tibet and Nepal, Southeast Asia and the Far East.
Noteworthy are the artifacts Iranian and pakistanidel IV-I millennium BC, the Tibetan paintings on cloth; sculptures buddistiche, Khmer and Indian, the Chinese ritual vessels of the Shang and Zhou Dynasty, the Japanese woodcuts.
