The museum displays works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Agnolo Bronzino , Antonio Canova , Caravaggio , Raphael, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian.

It can be considered unique in the world with regard to the number and importance of the sculptures of Bernini and paintings by Caravaggio .

Keep sculptures, bas-reliefs and ancient mosaics , as well as paintings and sculptures from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.

The collection, initially formed by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the early seventeenth century, includes important paintings by Antonello da Messina , Giovanni Bellini , Raphael , Titian, Correggio , Caravaggio and splendid sculptures of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Canova .

The most important nucleus of the sculptures and paintings in the Borghese Gallery date back to Cardinal Scipione's collection (1579-1633) , the son of Ortensia Borghese , sister of Pope Paul V, and Francesco Caffarelli, but the events of the next three centuries , including losses and acquisition have left their mark.

The attention of Cardinal Scipione was directed at all the works of ancient , Renaissance and contemporary art designed to evoke a new golden age .

Not particularly interested in medieval art, but passionately , antique sculpture.

But the ambition of the cardinal encouraged the creation of new sculptures and especially marble groups compared with antique works.

The portrait of Pauline Bonaparte , executed by Canova between 1805 and 1808 , is in the villa since 1838.

In 1807 Camillo Borghese sold Napoleon 154 statues , 160 busts , 170 bas-reliefs , 30 columns and various vessels that make up the bottom Borghese in the Louvre.

But already in the third decade of the nineteenth century these gaps seem filled with new finds from recent excavations and works recuperated from the cellars and various other Borghese residences .

The collection of paintings of the cardinal-nephew was remarkable and poetically described already in 1613 by Scipione Francucci .

In 1607 the Pope did to Cardinal 107 paintings confiscated from the painter Giuseppe Cesari , known as Cavalier d'Arpino .

The following year was secretly removed from the Baglioni Chapel in the church of San Francesco in Perugia and transported to Raphael's Rome Deposition , given to the Cardinal Scipione through a pope motu proprio .

In 1682, part of Olimpia Aldobrandini , which included works from the collection of Cardinal Salviati and Lucrezia d' Este, the Borghese collection .

In 1827 Camillo bought in Paris the important Correggio's Danae.
