FRIEDRICH NOACK (1858-1930) IN ITALY

Friedrich Noack, one of the first correspondents from Italy for the Kölnische Zeitung, the "most industrious of all German journalists in Rome" (Ludwig Pollak), is known primarily for his seminal volume on the presence of German artists in Rome, "Das Deutschtum in Rom seit Ausgang des Mittelalters" (1927).
Until now, almost nothing was known about the private life of Noack, a cultural historian and scholar who lived in Rome from 1891 to 1915. The Goethe House has succeeded in tracing the hitherto unknown private legacy in Germany and involving his great-grandchildren in the exhibition project. A journey back through the two centuries: watercolors, photographs, manuscripts, documents and personal objects illustrate the story of a versatile man who knew Italy and could tell it like few others.
Noack combines the spirit of the historian with the curiosity of the journalist for his time, a professional figure still new in the Wilhelminian era. With his precise observations on the political life and customs of Italian and Roman society, he contributed in what was then Germany - on the eve of World War I - to a deeper understanding of Italy...
