The Domus Aurea (\\\"Golden House\\\" in Latin) was the urban villa built by the Roman Emperor Nero, after the big fire that devastated Rome in 64 AD.
Built of brick and stone, in the few years between the fire and the death of Nero in 68 AD, the extensive gold-leaf cast which gave his name were not the only extravagant element of the house: stuccoed ceilings were encrusted with semi-precious stones and ivory plates. Pliny the Elder watched its construction process.
