The Jewish ghetto in Rome is one of the oldest slums in the world; in fact arose 40 years after the one in Venice which is the first ever. The term is derived from the name of the district Venetian gheto, where there was a foundry (in fact gheto in Venetian), where the Jews of that city were forced to reside.
