Rome is a city of hidden wonders. Or, better said: lesser-known wonders.
Among these are the Vatican Gardens. For centuries they were restricted and kept secret; today they are open to visitors from all over the world, thanks to an audio-led tour on-board the Roma Cristiana minibus, with the "Experience" commentary. A journey through the green side of the smallest country in the world. Originally planned in the 13th century for Pope Nicholas III, and embellished over time for various Popes, the Vatican Gardens speak to the history of centuries of the Papacy and represent a marvellous intersection of nature, art and faith. Its natural beauty, the works of genius and talent of so many artists and builders and the faith of those who inspired and wished for the realization of this incredible place. A place of unforgettable flora: Mediterranean flowers and plant life next to exotic species which arrived here from far-away lands, sprouting lawns, hundred-year-old trees, hedges, and even a small forest and the reproduction of a seaside cliff. The same is true for the many works of art you can find immersed in the green landscape: small temples, villas, caves, fountains, towers, ancient walls, statues, archaeological finds. Many are works erected in honour of the events and places connected with the history of the Catholic Church. The gardens are an oasis of discrete peace, where Popes have continued to seek out a quiet place in which to reflect and rest. This garden, restricted and kept secret for centuries, is a unique weave of nature, history and religious memory now open to visitors from all corners of the world. |
