Characters from the dance-halls and cafés in Montmartre, the brothels, the famous Moulin Rouge, the circus, the theatres, described with caustic melancholy through rapid brushstrokes. On display in the first vast retrospective exhibition dedicated to the great French artist in Rome, an image of the picturesque humanity made up of ballerinas, prostitutes, clowns, actresses, aristocrats and Parisian bourgeois.
