Castel Sant'Angelo over the centuries has assumed different functions and forms: from the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian to the fortress of the popes, from a Renaissance residence to a prison, from a barracks to a museum. On summer evenings, the public has the opportunity to immerse themselves in this millenary history guided by specialized staff following three different itineraries: The mausoleum . The emperor Hadrian wanted to build for himself and his family a tomb similar to that of Augustus but much more impressive. The visitor will be able to admire the original structures and even get to step on the place where the famous roof garden stood. The fortress . With the decline of the Empire the mausoleum was progressively transformed into an impregnable fortress: the public will understand the functioning of the defensive structures, walking the rampart, entering the prisons and discovering the position of the fire mouths. The residence . Over the centuries the pontiffs gradually enlarged and embellished their rooms. The visitor will enter, among other things, the apartment of Paolo III Farnese, decorated by the great Perin della Vaga and his team. Also in the evening it will also be possible to go along the Passetto , or the famous 800-meter walkway that connects Castel Sant'Angelo to the Palazzo Vaticani.
