Then proceeding along the Ancient Appian Way, you will pass by the Chapel of “Domine Quo Vadis?” before arriving at the Catacombs, the ancient underground cemeteries and first hiding places for the Christians. A visit will be made to either the Catacombs of S. Callisto, Santa Domitilla or San Sebastiano depending upon seasonal conditions. In order to arrive at the Vatican City we pass by some of the most famous sights of the city, starting with the Piazza della Repubblica with its Nayad Fountain then the beautiful Piazza Barberini with Bernini’s lovely Baroque Tritone Fountain. Continuing along the famous Via Veneto, we reach and then follow the ancient Aurelian Walls passing by the impressive Villa Borghese park until we get to the Piazza del Popolo, the northern entrance into ancient Rome with its Egyptian obelisk dating back to the time of Ramses II. Just before arriving at St. Peter’s Square we pass by the massive Castel S. Angelo the ancient tomb of Emperor Hadrian. The Papal Audience will take place either in St. Peter’s Square, St. Peter’s Basilica or the Audience Hall; according to seasonal conditions and the number of pilgrims involved. Our local guide will advise you when and where to meet the bus at the end of the audience.

The tour will then proceed to the south of Rome, through characteristic hills many of which are of volcanic origin, known as ‘Colli Albani’. The Pope’s summer residence is very near the volcanic lake of Albano and the Papal Blessing will take place in the square facing the Papal palace of Castelgandolfo. Ostia Antica

Tutti i martedì e venerdì mattina - Durata: circa 4 ore dal 1°marzo al 31 ottobre (minimo 6 persone)

Situate tra cipressi e pini mediterranei, le rovine del porto dell’antica Roma, rivelano più di altri resti della Capitale, aspetti della vita quotidiana e dei metodi costruttivi del passato. Partendo da Roma percorrendo la via che porta al mare, dopo circa 30 minuti di viaggio, giungiamo ad Ostia Antica, città romana di età imperiale, il cui nome deriva dal latino “Ostium” (bocca del fiume) foce del Tevere. Fondata intorno al IV sec. A.C. dal re Anco Marzio, Ostia sviluppò una fiorente attività commerciale ma in seguito alle invasioni barbariche ed al lento successivo insabbiamento del Tevere, iniziò il suo decadimento. Gli scavi di Ostia Antica iniziati nei primi anni del secolo scorso, non hanno portato alla luce soltanto un’antica città ma hanno rivelato tutti gli aspetti della civiltà romana relativa ad un periodo di circa 900 anni, dal IV sec. A.C. al IV d.C. La passeggiata tra le rovine, con la nostra guida, ci farà conoscere la vita culturale e sociale di questo interessante centro commerciale. Subito dopo l’ingresso si prende la via delle Tombe che costituisce l’entrata in città e conduce all’antica Porta Romana oltre la quale inizia la via principale: il Decumanus Maximus, che attraversa la città da NE a SO. Vedremo poi le Terme di Nettuno da dove si possono ammirare i famosi mosaici di Nettuno ed Anfitrite, il Teatro costruito da Agrippa ed il Foro, centro della città. Qui si trovano i principali edifici pubblici e di culto: il Capitolium, il Tempio di Roma e Augusto, la Basilica e le grandi Terme del Foro. Sul piazzale del Foro, troviamo inoltre la casa di Diana ed il Termopolium, antico bar romano. Più avanti sorge il Museo Ostiense che raccoglie i pezzi migliori degli scavi. Al termine di questa affascinante passeggiata.

Situated amongst cypress and Mediterranean pine trees, the ruins of the port of ancient Rome reveal more than any other monument in the capital, what everyday life must have been like in ancient times. Leaving Rome and following the road leading to the sea, Via del Mare, it takes about 30 minutes to reach Ostia, the Roman city of the Imperial age whose Latin name ‘Ostium’ means ‘mouth of the river’, reflecting its position along the Tiber river. Ostia was founded around the 4th century BC by King Anco Marzio and became the harbour of Rome around which, throughout the following centuries, a flourishing trade and business centre developed. Following the Barbarian invasions, the decline of Ostia began when the port was abandoned and became silted up. The archaeolgical excavations undertaken at the beginning of the XIX century have brought the ancient city back to light, a rare witness to 900 years of Roman civilization. During your walk through the ruins, your guide will tell you something about the cultural and social life of this interesting commercial settlement. Your visit to Ostia Antica itself starts at ‘Via delle Tombe’ which leads to the ‘Porta Romana’, one of the city’s three gates. This is the beginning of the ‘Decumanus Maximus’, the main thoroughfare that crosses the city from north east to south west. Then you will arrive at the ‘Terme di Nettuno’ where you can admire the beautiful black and white mosaics representing Neptune and Amphitrite, the theatre built by Agrippa and the Forum which formed the centre of the city. Here you will discover the principle public buildings, ‘Il Capitolium’ and the temple of Rome and Augustus, the Basilica and the large thermal baths. Near the forum square you will also find the House of Diana and the ‘Thermopolium’ an ancient Roman bar with a marble counter and a fresco depicting the fruit and foodstuffs that were sold there. At the end of Via dei Dipinti, the Museo Ostiense displays some of the ancient sculptures and mosaics found among the ruins.

Un tour che vi offre la possibilità di scoprire i principali monumenti della città eterna, in un’atmosfera romantica di altri tempi. Vedremo, tra l’altro, la Fontana delle Nayadi, il Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Piazza Venezia con il monumento dedicato al Milite Ignoto ed il Campidoglio. Rivivremo l’epoca della Roma imperiale ammirando il Foro Romano, il Colosseo, l’Arco di Costantino ed il Circo Massimo. Ci troveremo proiettati nell’epoca dei papi quando, costeggiando il Tevere, vedremo il quartiere ebraico con la Sinagoga e nei pressi, l’imponente mole di Castel S. Angelo che ci introduce alla Basilica di San Pietro. Il parco di Villa Borghese fa da cornice ad alcune delle più belle porte di Roma: Porta Flaminia, dalla quale si può ammirare Piazza del Popolo, e Porta Pinciana, che dà accesso a Via Veneto, il simbolo della “Dolce Vita”. Il tour prevede due soste: Piazza Navona con la bellissima Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi e Fontana di Trevi, rispettando così la tradizione del lancio della moneta. Rientro nei pressi dell’albergo.

Discover some of the main monuments of the Eternal City in the romantic atmosphere of times past. Some of the sights you pass by include The Fountain of the Nayads, The Exhibition Palace, Piazza Venezia with its Tomb to the Unknown Soldier and the Capitoline Hill. Glimpse the Imperial Roman Age as you drive by and admire the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and the Circus Maximus. Leap into the Papal era when, driving along the banks of the Tiber, you see the Jewish Quarter complete with synagogue and the imposing Castel Sant’Angelo closeby that heralds your approach to St. Peter’s. Set in the ancient Aurelian Walls that frame part of the Villa Borghese park, you’ll see a couple of the most beautiful gateways in Rome: Porta Flaminia through which you can admire the Piazza del Popolo and Porta Pinciana, through which you reach the famous Via Veneto symbol of “la dolce vita” in Rome. There will be two stops on this tour: at Piazza Navona to see Bernini’s beautiful Fountain of the Four Rivers and at the Trevi Fountain so that you can keep up the tradition of throwing coins into the fountain. Return to the vicinity of your hotel.
