In the beginning of the I 7th century, the Flemish painter Rubens left his country and moved to Rome to study classical art. The artìst soon became famous and painted several masterpieces for many Roman churches and mansions, such as the beautiful Piety, painted in 1602. lt is a huge canvas, whìch reveals the influence over the artist of the most important painters of the l6th century, such as Titian, Correggio and Michelangelo.
The painting Susanna and the old men (1607) was painted by Rubens in homage to the Italian art. Among the other works in this room, one can see two remarkable portraits of the I 7th century: the Portrait of Monsignor Merlini by Andrea Sacchi (1630), which portrays the humanist sitting in his library; the Portrait of Marcello Sacchetti, a Roman nobleman portrayed by his "protegé" Pietro da Cortona. Last but not least, one can see the Burial of Jesus Christ, painted by Sisto Badalocchio in 1610, whìch is a baroque version of Raphael’s painting exhibited in Room no. 9. susanna1.jpg (12745 byte)
