CENTRALE MONTEMARTINI
The electirc power plant that bears the name of Giovanni Montemartini, historical "technology councillor" of the Rome Municipality, located on the Via Ostiense, represents an example of re-conversion of an industrial complex in disuse. The first public power plant that from 1912 to 1969 furnished energy for the illumination of the city, is today an exhibition space for many ancient sculptures of the Musei Capitolini. The large spaces of the power plant, and in particular the machine room of a refined Art Noveaux style, has remained unchanged, as if the great turbines, diesel motors and the colossal steam boiler have just stopped functioning. Next to these the antique marble statues are silhouetted, standing out for their transparent brightness and their elegant carving and creating by juxtaposition an enchanting and suggestive scene. It even seems that some of the masterpieces of ancient sculptures, such as the series of statues that decorated the pediment of the Apollo Sosiano, the Esquiline Venus and the thoughtful figure of the muse Polimnia, stand out even more in this atmosphere which recalls on the one hand the monumental greatness of Ancient Rome and on the other a more recent past and the memory of one of the first industrial environments of Rome. The object of the exhibition is to reconstruct in these enormous rooms the ancient monumental sites and to rediscover the rediscover the development of the city of Rome from the age of the kings to the late Imperial period.

- Museo Criminologico
The Criminology Museum was established by the Prison Administration seventy years ago, thus realizing a project that had already been conceived in the late nineteenth century as a useful means of studying the penal and prison system, as well as a scientific tool for training officers and magistrates, and for educational purposes.
For several decades the Criminology Museum was highly acclaimed also abroad due to the rich historical and scientific legacy it conserved. The historical events that followed, however, obliged it to reduce its activities until it finally had to close, although the museum was restructured and opened to the public once more in 1994.
Today there is a renewed interest in the study of penitentiary systems and criminology, and the Criminology Museum, which now provides valuable historical evidence, enables the Prison Administration to preserve and protect a legacy and wealth of documentation that is unique in Italy, part of which is presented in this volume.
Among the many interesting items on display there are early instruments of torture and of execution that testify to the cruelty of former penal systems as opposed to the aims of punishment now enshrined in the Italian Constitution, which are the principles on which current Penitentiary Law is founded.
This is just one aspect of the Criminology Museum’s fascinating itinerary, which offers food for thought to those who wish to explore themes that concern the less-well-known aspects of Italian history.
The history of imprisonment and of justice can also be recounted through preserving the memory that resides in places, objects, photographs and written documents, and in this way it is possible to provide the younger generations with tools for interpreting a reality that, for the most part, is unknown.

· MUSEUM ATELIER CANOVA TADOLINI
The recent restoration was a sensitive operation to salvage the unique atmosphere of the once disorderly atelier. This was done by respecting the original colours of the decoration and materials and the casual placing of the works. The precious atelier, probably the only surviving exemplar of the sort, houses a collection grouped togheter in casual arrangement failing to follow a systematic order. Thus, the juxtaposition of works by Canova and Adamo with more romantic works, or with works of a more political tone such as the ones by Scipione and Giulio, or even with the more intimate world of Enrico is voluntary, fulfilling the creation of a timeless atelier.
