ANTIQUARIUM
COMUNALE
This is both a museum and an archeological storehouse where marble from architectural and
funeral structures, statues, mosaics and frescos, hydraulic elements and instrumentum
domesticum from Roman times are kept. The visit comprises an internal and an external
itinerary. The itinerary inside the museum begins with an extraordinary example of
parietal mosaic decoration, discovered at the end of the last century during the work for
the construction of Via Nazionale. The delightful itinerary in the exterrnal garden area
addresses three special themes: architectural decorations, the development of funeral
customs and the complex problems associated with trade in coloured marble.

National Museum of Palazzo Venezia
- This
Museum was once the majestic papal residence of the Venetian Pope Paul II (Pietro Barbo )
(1464 - 1471), an avid collector and ideal initiator of the building's museumm and
artistic destiny. Founded in 1921, the museum focuses its interests on the so-called
"applied arts". Its collections were formed starting from an initial core group
of sculptures and other art works coming from Castel Sant'Angelo, the National Gallery of
Ancient Art, and the Collections of the nearby Museo del Collegio Romano, founded in the
17th century by the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher. The Artistic Material of the original
collection consisted mainly of Medieval and Renaissance works, specimens from particular
sectors of decorative art such as small bronzes, enamel work, and ceramics produced in
Italy. Following sizeable bequests and numerous public and private donations, the Museum
of Palazzo Venezia gradually came to distinguish itself as a major museum of applied arts.
