Gods and machines - the sculptures of the ancient Rome

Inaugurated in 1912 the Centrale Montemartini was the first public electric plant in Rome and today it houses a museum which displays statues and sculptures from ancient Greece and Rome and marble from various parts of the Mediterranean. In this way the stark contrast between the raw material and the elegance of finished classical workings of it is brought into clear view. Among the collections on display are Heracles and Athena in painted terracotta; portraits of Barberini in a toga from the Temple of Foro Boario; ruins of the Temple of Apollo; a statue of Athena and one of Venus seated on a horse and, among several others, a statue of Polimnia holding a scroll in his hands.
