Nightly guided tours with multimedia presentations by Studio Azzurro
The moon over the Colosseum - The dream of the gladiator is the title that characterizes the 2019 edition of the guided tour. Arriving on the arena floor - after having traversed the second order and discovered the cavities of the underground - the audience witnesses a projection that, through the dream of a glorious champion on the eve of the fight, remembers the exploits of the most talented gladiators whose names they are known to us from ancient sources.
Guided groups of 25 people experience the nocturnal and quiet magic of the amphitheater in a journey - lasting 75 minutes - that combines the historical tale with images and sounds created by Studio Azzurro.
Ancient and distant sounds, like cymbals and lutes, welcome the first steps of the visitor who starts the second order of the Colosseum to immediately enjoy the extraordinary view of the Arch of Constantine and the colonnade of the Temple of Venus and Rome.
To the story of the monument's history - referenced by guides formed by archaeologists, art historians and architects - video installations are grafted with testimonies on the amphitheater left by emblematic figures of the past: Martial, Cassio Dione, St. Augustine, Artemidorus. The images, the voices and the sounds are activated when the visitors pass, and anticipate the final projection.
On the level of the arena, meanwhile, silhouettes of stage servants, torches in hand, are shadows cast on the curtain stirred by the evening breeze. They await the arrival of the public for the last act of the visit.
Before that we descend into the bowels of the monument. Here is explained the operation of the technical apparatus that allowed the lifting of men and animals from the underground to the arena. Like Chinese shadows, the figures that populated these spaces appear almost by magic on the ancient walls: wild beasts and exotic animals. And the gladiators.
Climbed onto the arena, right where shows and bloody battles took place, the curtain opens on "The dream of the gladiator". Projected on three large veils, the images stage the night before the games start and what in a fantastic, but very human, way could have passed into the mind of a fighter waiting to take up arms and challenge fate. The same fate shared by Carpoforo, Diodoro and Demetrio, famous gladiators of which the ancient sources remind us of the grandiose deeds that drove the ancient Romans, immeasurably crowded in the stands of the Colosseum, into huge cheer.
