Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is one of the most famous squares of Rome. Its shape is that of an ancient stadium: it was built in monumental style at the behest of Pope Innocent X (Giovanni Battista Pamphili).

Piazza Navona, in ancient Rome, it was the Stadium of Domitian, which was built by the emperor Domitian at the year 85 (in the third century) and was restored by Alexander Severus. It was 276 meters long, 106 wide and could accommodate 30,000 spectators.

Piazza Navona is the place of Roman games and celebrations. Firstly people amused themselves by flooding the square during the summer and bathing, but also games and chariot races. The Pope Innocent X in 1600 made embellished it by the greatest architects of the time, and built in the center the "Fountain of the Rivers". People, however, did not approve all expenditures made for the works of art,
