Fountains of Rome
Fontana della Navicella
On the Celio hill, opposite the church of Santa Maria in Domnica also called in navicula, restored by Cardinal Medici (who was later pope under the name of Leo X) and on the ceiling of which appear several small boats wandering amid the waves, ther is the fountain called the small boat, designed by Sansovino and probably dating from the early years of the sixteenth century (1518-19).
The marble boat, representing a Roman galley, it would be inspired, according to legend, by votive offering by sailors to Isis, protectress of sailors. From the center of the deck of the small ship that is placed on a base decorated with the coats of arms of Leo X, rises a jet of water that collects in the underlying oval tub of travertine.
