Squares of Rome
Piazza Colonna in Rome, owes its name to the Column of Marcus Aurelius that stood here since ancient times, and which gives its name also to the homonymous Rione Colonna, of which the square is a part.
The square, which was built in the late sixteenth century by Pope Sixtus V, is centrally located on Via del Corso, near the Pantheon and Montecitorio, not far from Piazza Venezia.
